AMANECER = SUNRISE

A white half sun is quilted on dark magenta cotton, alluding to the early moments of the sunrise, where the sky is lightening up from the pitch black night into dark blue, purple with a hint of yellow. Humans have lived according to the cycles of the sun since the dawn of time. The Sun is about enlightenment, visibility and energy. It is a source of life for us and many accompanying non-human species. The placement above the waist, around the stomach area, represents the birth of ideas, from our intuition, which lives in our gut area.

Amanda’s wearable art pieces are created to have an intimate and spiritual interaction with the wearer. She hopes to spark intuitive dressing in her audience, which refers to purchasing, owning, lending, mending and wearing pieces that have spiritual meaning because of the way they were made, what is depicted in them and how it makes you feel when you wear them. As with the scarves, each piece represents something about us, our existence and how that connects to our natural surroundings. The pieces are done combining industrial techniques with couture techniques, taught to the designer by her grandmother. Each piece is meant to distort the body in unusual, alien ways as you move in them, imagining new ways of seeing beauty outside the modern beauty standard.

As part of Amanda’s formula, every silhouette is seen as a three dimensional canvas, and every print lives completely in symbiosis with each piece’s shape. The prints are designed alongside the draping and pattern making process.

All pieces are made of deadstock, donated, and/or sourced non-organic and organic cotton. No chemical dyes were used to color the pieces. Printing happened locally in New York and abroad in London, in a small, women-owned experimental screen printing facility. All samples were designed, fitted and developed in-house, with a full small-batch production run done in Utuado, Puerto Rico.
